Year 6 Transition
St Monica’s considers the transition from Primary to Secondary school to be one of the most important events in a child’s education and we endeavour to ensure that children feel completely supported throughout this process. Our care, time and dedication means our students start Year 7 in September without any concerns and quickly become settled and engaged members of the St Monica’s community.
Every child who is given a place with us will be supported and we complete visits and calls to their Year 6 teacher, where we will discuss their academic strengths, areas of support and interests. This information will be used to place them in forms with like-minded individuals to help form friendships and develop as individuals.
Year 6 students who are allocated a place at St Monica’s will attend a taster day in June. This taster day gives the students an opportunity to follow a day with their new tutor group, meet new friends and, most importantly, start to meet some of the teachers who they will be spending the next 5 years with. As part of our transition process, we offer a series of extra days for pupils with extra learning support needs and for those who are highlighted by primary schools as needing extra support with the process of moving to high school. These days take place before the main day and are designed to help pupils feel more confident and have a better understanding of the layout of the school and the support they can access. Pupils for these days will be highlighted from primary schools and for those with SEND as we want to keep them in small groups. Any pupils highlighted for accessing these days will receive a separate invite to join us for the days allocated.
There is also an information evening for all Year 6 parents in July. This is an opportunity to gain information about your child starting in September. There will also be opportunities for both pupils and parents to ask questions and raise any concerns they may have.
