Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) at St Monica’s

At St Monica’s we recognise our role in preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges they will experience post school. In response we have developed a CEIAG programme that enables them to explore their options, develop their life skills and prepare them for the future.

Our unique programme underlines our commitment to ensure young people achieve during their time at St Monica’s and beyond, by providing students with the information and necessary skills to make informed decisions about their future and a positive transition to post 16 education or training.

The CEIAG programme we offer is delivered to all students in Years 7 to 11 through PSHCE, and LORIC lessons, in partnership with outside agencies, local colleges and training providers, apprenticeship providers, universities and employers. As part of the programme young people progress through a series of structured lessons, activities in schools, assemblies, virtual sector visits and events that are differentiated and personalised to them.

The CEIAG Team

St Monica’s have a dedicated team who work together to offer high quality, impartial advice and guidance. As well as having all pastoral and subject area teams on board there is also a dedicated Careers team. They are:

The school is constantly keeping up to date with changes and in particular working to meet all of the Gatsby Benchmarks.

We work to develop our CEIAG programme this is underpinned by the principles of equality and diversity and the raising of aspiration

We are aiming to meet the eight Gatsby Benchmarks. The eight Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career Guidance:

    3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
    4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
    5. Encounters with employers and employees
    6. Experiences of workplaces
    7. Encounters with further and higher education
    8. Personal guidance

Raising the Participation Age

From summer 2015 the law changed and all young people are now required to continue in education or training until the year in which they turn 18. As a school we fully support this change and believe that the aspirations of our students can best be met by them moving into education, training or employment when they leave us.

Parental Guidance – Parental Guidance is from the Careers Writers Association. They are highly experienced careers writers of articles, books and web-based materials for all age groups, particularly young people. 

The aim of this site is to provide helpful information to parents and carers, many of whom feel at a loss about the best way to advise the young people in their care.

GMACS – The Greater Manchester Apprenticeship & Careers Service (GMACS) helps young people explore and design their next steps before leaving school.

The site brings together different stages of the career planning process, helping students navigate the choices open to them and develop the tools to start working life. It showcases what Greater Manchester can offer and provides a direct way to apply for courses, jobs and apprenticeships.
